When 3000 hits means the Hall of Fame - you had 2757. When 300 homers was a significant achievement - you had 256. When speed was appreciated - you burned the bases and stole 305 times, with 127 triples and 485 doubles. When clutch hitting counted - you drove home 1170 runners. You led the league in runs (once), hits (twice), doubles (twice), triples (twice), and fielding  (twice). Four times you scored over 100 runs (eight times over 90). Twice you drove in 100+ runs. Four times you had over 200 hits.       When I was nine years old, my Grandfather gave me a book in which he had kept score of ballgames for Cincinnati beginning in 1940 - the Reds World Championship Season. I began to score ballgames in that book beginning in 1960. In 1961 I watched as you and the Redlegs won the National League pennant. Through the next several years I scored games as you hit - over an eight year period you hit .398 in all the games I scored - is there any wonder why I idolized you? - Bob Wood << Previous • Next >>
