GARY SIBLEY 52 year old Auditor with the U.S. Naval Audit Service Ashburn, Virginia Birdsnest
Bombers/Rapidan Rapids/Wilderness Wraiths The Harbor Beach franchise was acquired at the end of the 1990 season. In 1990, the team played without an owner pending my return to the United States and settling in before taking on the responsibility for the Bombers, my second TCBA franchise. Ironically, 1990 was the team’s best season, and it reached the final playoff series before being beaten by Scranton for the championship. Because I took over just after the regular season, I was able to manage the team in the face-to-face playoffs in Lancaster, 1991. To date this has been the only Birdsnest playoff experience in TCBA AL. The franchise name came from the street of my residence, Birdsnest Place, and “Bombers” just seemed to fit. I don’t think anyone could forget Lancaster 1992, when all 20 managers were together for an outstanding experience, accentuated by our first live rookie auction. What a success! The following year, my wife accompanied me to Lancaster and after meeting the gang, she gained an important appreciation for my hobby and an understanding of my enthusiasm. Our life together became even better than before. Thinking about it, the TCBA experience itself is hard to top. Trading to Oblivion: Can anyone top this? Within four years, Birdsnest traded away Kirby Puckett, Tony Gwynn, Randy Johnson, Jeff Bagwell, and Matt Williams. One could write a book! Fortunately, the beauty of TCBA is that one doesn’t have to be particularly good, smart, or lucky to have a ton of fun.
