With 90% of the eligible ballots cast, voting for the TCBA Players’ Hall of Fame Class 22 concluded last week with members selecting five players to be enshrined. Ainspan slugger Ralph Kiner, in his second attempt, led the pack with 85.7% of the vote, followed by Luke Appling’s 82.8% and Derek Jeter at 81.4%. Pitchers traditionally receive less support than position players; Newhouser (72.1%) and Lyons (70.4%) were no exception. However, each breached the 70% mark, providing them with entry along with the three others.

Kiner, who received 65% in his first attempt, was a no-doubter this time. The slugging outfielder played his entire 10-year career with South Starrucca, leading the Ainspans to five post-season appearances, including championship seasons in 1950 and 1954. He retired after the 1956 season due to back issues but remained in the Ainspan family for a long time as a broadcaster for the Scranton SpanFlies.

Derek Jeter joined the Newark Eagles in 1997. For the next 17 seasons, Jeter anchored shortstop for the high-flying Eagles, setting a new standard for the position. Eight times Jeter would lead his team to the playoffs, including five consecutive division crowns from 1997-2001.  Three times he would join his teammates in hoisting the hefty World Series trophy. Jeter tested retirement in 2014, returning to part-time action in 2015 as an effective pinch-hitter for Farmington before permanently ending his career. He is currently #11 in hits all-time with 3077, having played in 2661 games (#25).

Luke Appling played thirteen seasons with the Bergen Barflies before joining Hyde Park for his final seven seasons. In 1941, “Ol’ Aches and Pains” hit .398, leading the Barflies to a league crown.

Ted Lyons accumulated 265 wins for the Fortney/Arlington franchise, leading the Gators to a pair of titles ten years apart – 1926-1936. Hal Newhouser worked 17 seasons for Mimosa and Siouxland, racking up 204 wins. Although he never saw a league title, Hal appeared in the playoffs four times.

Eight other players received votes in this recent election. Red Schoendienst with 39.4% and Lance Berkman with 47.3% in their second try received sufficient support for future consideration. First-timer Lou Boudreau will also appear at least once more.

Voting for Class 23 will be held in January 2020. The vote totals for Class 22 are listed below:
