Kilkenny was the site of celebration following
the announcement that two 1930’s Gaellic stalwarts,
Earl Averill and Joe Medwick, had been elected to the TCBA Hall of Fame. Averill arrived on the scene as a rookie in
1930 and made his presence felt immediately, batting .340, driving in 130
runners, and leading Mike Kane’s Kilkenny team to a league championship. Earl
would remain in Kilkenny for the next ten seasons, adding another
championship ring in 1938. A career .341 hitter, Averill would appear in the
post-season five times in his career, including another championship run with
Bergen in his penultimate season of 1941. After three seasons with Kilkenny, Averill
was joined by Joe “Ducky” Medwick, who debuted with the Gaellics
in 1933. A career .326 hitter, Medwick batted .400 in 1938 and drove in 164
runners, teaming up with Averill to form an unstoppable duo, all the way to
the league championship in 1938. It is no surprise that the Kilkenny
community celebrates the induction of those two local heroes. Joe Medwick would go on to play his final
six seasons in Bradenton, appearing in two more post-seasons with the
Buckeyes. Only
80.9% of the available ballots were cast for Class 32, marking the lowest
participation in the history of Hall of Fame voting. Of the remaining
candidates, Lefty Gomez came so close, with a 67.7% vote tally. But in a year
with few available votes, it just wasn’t enough. Voting for Class 33 is scheduled for
December of 2024. The vote totals for Class 32 are listed below: Class 32 Voting Totals:
