Vlad Guerrero, Sr. |
|
There is no doubt about it! Vlad Guerrero Sr. is now a
proud member of the TCBA Hall of Fame. Named on 92.8% of the ballots cast,
Guerrero was the only Class of 29 candidate to be granted the honor, and
deservedly so. Vladimir Guerrero joined TCBA as a highly
prized rookie in 1998, joining Casey Lyman’s Portsmouth Pubdwellers for
$167K. For the entirety of his 15-season career, Vlad paid massive dividends,
far beyond those of fellow “big-bucks” rookies like Jose Cruz Jr (RH-$170),
Neifi Perez (MI-$193), and Ben Grieve (LI-$203). After a modest rookie season with 11
homeruns, Guerrero exploded at the plate in 1999, batting .327 with 46
homeruns. He followed that with consecutive 50+ homerun seasons in 2000-2001.
Eight times in his 15 seasons Vlad eclipsed the .300 bar, remarkable
considering his prodigious power. Only once in his career did Vlad Sr. strike
out more than 100 times. That was in 2002, a season in which he hit 53 doubles
and 40 homers to go with a .311 average. For
his career, Guerrero hit 450 homeruns, #29 overall. His 1536 RBI is 28th
best in TCBA history. The Pubdwellers reached the playoffs four times during
Guerrero’s tenure, including an Atlantic Division pennant in 2004. Class 29 received 85% voter participation,
a slight increase from the historic low turnout of 79.5% for Class 28, but
still below the 90%+ levels that had been the norm. While some argue that the
quality of candidates dictates participation levels, there is no doubt that
Vlad Guerrero Sr. deserves the honor. Voting for Class 30 will be held in November
2023. The vote totals for Class 29 are listed below: Class 29 Voting Totals:
