Despite Hall of Fame Snub, Classy Catcher Johnny Bench Thank
Supporters Joe Sewell |
Voting for the TCBA
Players’ Hall of Fame Class 15 concluded this week, on
Valentine’s Day, with voters breaking the hearts of several worthy
candidates. Premier
catcher Johnny Bench came within 23 votes, but fell short with 67.9% of the
votes cast. For Bench, and old-timer Joe Sewell (60.4%), the results were a
bitter pill to swallow. Both of them, along with the steroid-tainted Rafael Palmeiro (38.8%) have used up their Hall of Fame
eligibility and will now be relegated to the human mass of Also-rans. On
the pitching side, voters continued their general rejection of pitchers as a
worthy group. Roberto Hernandez, who will get another shot in 2017 along with
Reuss, Sutter and Dick Donovan, garnered 54.1% of
the votes cast, still far from the 70% required. In
all, 98.5% of the eligible ballots were cast, with 12 players receiving at
least one vote. Of the 23 players appearing on the ballot, 11 were eliminated
from Hall of Fame consideration due to lack of voter support. Class 16 balloting will occur in January of
2017, when the eight Class 15 eligible also-rans can be reconsidered. Class
16 will feature players who retired following the 2009, 1965, and 1938
seasons. The
vote totals for Class 15 are listed
