Voting for the TCBA Players’ Hall of Fame Class 13A concluded this week, with voters selecting one new member.

Dave Winfield became the 49th player to enter the TCBA Hall of Fame, receiving over 73% of the votes cast. The only player selected out of the Class of 13A, Winfield appears frequently on the All-time Top 50 lists. He ranks 29th in Hits and 26th in RBI, and is in the Top 50 in Runs, Doubles, Home Runs, and Walks, among other categories.

Known primarily as a slugger throughout his TCBA career, Winfield twice hit over 40 home runs (40 in 1980 and 42 in 1984) on his way to a career total of 39.

However, on his arrival to the TCBA with the South Starrucca Ainspans, Winfield displayed good speed, stealing 170 bases in his career, including 37 for the Eastern Division champion Ainspans in 1977.

Dave also led Horseshoe Bay to the Western Division crown in 1987 and a Central title in 1993.

While five players from the Class of 13A will get one more shot (McCovey, Alomar, Brown, Molitor, and John), two players in particular suffered devastating defeat. Pete Rose missed induction by  just four votes., while Tom Raines, Sr. fell 38 short of the required 710 needed for this election. Both were appearing on their final ballot, joining Burleigh Grimes in the almost-but-not-quite club.

In all, 98.7% of the eligible ballots were cast, with 19 players receiving at least one vote. Of the 35 players appearing on the ballot, 29 were eliminated from Hall of Fame consideration due to lack of voter support.

Class 14 balloting will occur sometime later in 2015, when the five Class 13A also-rans can be reconsidered.
