Baltimore Orioles - 1933-1954
Walter MacEachern,
GM
Franchise #9
History Brief: A
Baltimore investment group led by GM Walter MacEachern purchased the
Franchise #9 team from Cleveland's
Craig Shifflett in the middle of the 1933 season. It was the second time
MacEachern had invested in a Baltimore team; his Franchise #12 BaySox played in Baltimore from 1921 to 1924 before
they were sold to Sacramento's
Gerry Hobbs. In 1999, MacEachern would also purchase Expansion Franchise
#25, establishing the Gunpowder
Ironmen.
Following the 1954 season, the Baltimore
Franchise #9 was sold back to the original owner, Craig Shifflett, who
returned the team to Cleveland. The franchise remained there until 1972,
after which it disbanded. In 1976, John Flood bought the franchise at a
foreclosure sale and established a team in Connecticut. Today, Franchise #9
is owned and operated by Scott Brown in Horseshoe Bay.
