Scranton Spanish Flies

History:  Originally drafted the South Starrucca Ainspans.  Took a year and a half sabbatical and returned by taking over a team called the Boston Americans, or Boston Africans, or African Americans, or something like that.  Needless to say, the team had a colorful background.  I jumped at the chance to participate in one of the early 80’s redrafts and thus, the Spanish Flies were hatched!

I resigned early in 1977 to take another crack at college.  Too many nights were spent shaking dice piloting the Ainspans rather than hitting the books.  Only way to remove the temptation was to bow out.  The pattern of irresponsibility carries over to the present day as evidenced by following scenario:  I return to my desk at work and there may be 10 messages waiting for me; six of them urgent, two critical, one life threatening, and one a “baseball call”.  Guess which one I call back first?

So for the next two years I was out of the league and pretty much lost touch with everyone, except Tedeschi.  Sure, there was the strip joints, gambling, and various sheep incidents, but heck, Frank could handle it.

One thing I noticed, the boxscores meant absolutely NOTHING!  I stopped reading them.  I might check the scores to see which team won, or the current standings, but how many hits Winfield or Rice got was of no concern. This was a weird feeling.

Early in ‘81, with graduation a few months away and pretty much a sure thing, I placed a call to Jim L. and asked if I could get back in.  After sending in the $250 dues for that year, (seemed a little high to me at the time, but Jim said everyone had to pay it.  Also something about his newborn son and the high cost of diapers.) I was officially back in, but the only franchise available was in the National League.  Not long after that someone dropped out in AL and I was back “home”.

Origin of Team Nickname - Doc Johnson’s catalog of adult and marital aids (I know they sure helped me!)
