Gentlemen..............

I have tried about 25 different openings to begin this letter, but none of them seem to be working for me, so, the best way to say this is probably the direct and to the point approach:

 - I am very sad to have to tell you that Don Mahley has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

There just isn't a good way to ease into that one. I've tried.

Its still very early in the process to know the specifics, the details, and the outcomes............but the one thing we DO know is that our friend and fellow TCBA family member is going to be with us for less time than we wanted.

There are no written in stone timeframes on this, and most of us have some reference with Stu McCorkindale's experience, but everyone is different.

Fortunately Don will have the best of care, from the doctors to his wife Julianna, and it doesn't hurt that he's a stubborn sunuvabitch that won't take a fight laying down! :-)

(Brooklyn will attest to that after locking horns with Don in last years Rookie Draft for Strasburg and everyone else dropped out 100 thousand dollars earlier, leaving just the two of them in a mano y mano grudge match to 185 k! Don didn't blink then, and I'm not figuring him to fold early in this challenge either!)

As for the GOOD news...................and speaking of the Rookie Draft.................although Don will not be in attendance at Grantville this year, he WILL be planning to be on the phone for the Rookie and Free Agent draft, assuming his health at the time allows it, so we'll look forward to hearing from him then.

Although Don is currently in the hospital and unavailable for phone contact.........he's still reachable by email. The TCBA has always been an amazing source of support in times like these; it’s always good to know that this organization that Jim L. founded is about a lot more than just baseball.

Sincerely,

 Marty
